John le Carré (real name David John Moore Cornwell, 1931–2020) was a British author best known for his espionage novels. A former intelligence officer for MI5 and MI6, he gained fame with The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1963), which established him as a master of realistic spy fiction. His works, including Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1974) and The Night Manager (1993), often explore themes of betrayal, morality, and the Cold War. Le Carré’s deep understanding of espionage, drawn from his own experience, gave his novels a level of authenticity unmatched in the genre. He continued writing until his death in 2020, leaving behind a legacy of literary thrillers that reshaped spy fiction.
About the book: The novel servs as both a sequel and a prequel to his classic Cold War-era spy novels, particularly The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1963) and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1974). The story revisits the events of The Spy Who Came in from the Cold from a new perspective, decades later. The protagonist is Peter Guillam, a former British intelligence officer who was once a close associate of George Smiley in the fictional Circus (le Carré’s version of MI6). Now retired and living in France, Guillam is summoned back to London by the modern-day British intelligence service.
