The Scholz Company, a renowned German game manufacturer, probably produced its first color domino games with pictures in the late 19th century or early 20th century. Scholz was known for its innovative and high-quality educational and board games, which often had educational goals. Scholz began producing games and playing cards in the middle of the 19th century. Color dominoes with pictures were a further development of the classic domino games and fit well with the company’s educational orientation. Such games became particularly popular during the period of educational reform (around 1900 to the 1920s), as they were seen as a means of promoting children’s development. In the early years of game manufacturing, it was common to release games without specific product numbers or company logos, as branding and standardized cataloging only became important later. Games focused more on functionality and less on branding. This domino dates from before the company became commercialized and product numbers and a company logo were introduced (probably in the 1930s).
