Rare, 1920s, First Greek Adaptation, Max und Moritz, Wilhelm Busch, Dimitrakos

Description

Extremely rare early Greek adaptation of Wilhelm Busch’s classic Max und Moritz, issued in Athens by Petros Dimitrakos in the 1920s.
Translated under the pseudonym ΦΑΚ, this edition preserves Busch’s original illustrations while adapting the text into Greek (polytonic) under the new title Ο Παύλος κι ο Μικές.

This appears to be the earliest known Greek rendering of Max und Moritz—long preceding any later adaptations, which only emerge many decades afterwards (e.g., a modern bilingual translation in 2002).
Its scarcity makes it a culturally significant milestone in the reception of illustrated literature in Greece, and an important collectible for those interested in early children’s books, Greek printed heritage, and the international influence of Wilhelm Busch.
