The leaping deer is a symbol of the Greek island of Rhodes due to its connection with the island’s mythology, history, and wildlife. According to Greek mythology, Rhodes was sacred to the sun god Helios, who bestowed the island with great beauty and prosperity. In one myth, deer (particularly a species of fallow deer, known as Dama dama) were introduced to Rhodes as a gift from the gods. The deer came to symbolize protection and purity, traits associated with divine favor. The fallow deer (Greek: πλατώνι), unique to Rhodes, played a significant role in the island’s natural ecosystem and culture. The species was once abundant and considered a protector of crops, as the deer were believed to help keep snakes and pests away. Today, the deer is protected, and its image is used to promote the island’s heritage and natural beauty.
Pottery stamped with “KERAMEIKOS – Keramikos” holds cultural and artistic value.
