About the Artist
Nikiforos Lytras (1832–1904) is widely regarded as one of the most significant Greek painters of the 19th century. Trained in Athens and at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Lytras was a leading figure of the “Munich School.” His works often explore themes of Greek identity, folklore, and portraiture, reflecting both academic rigor and emotional depth.
The portrait’s subject, Georgios Stavrou (1788–1869), was the founder and first governor of the National Bank of Greece — a symbol of national progress during Greece’s early years of independence.
