About the Artist:
A. Tassos (Anastasios Alevizos) is one of Greece’s most important engravers, celebrated for his politically engaged and socially conscious work. A student of Yannis Kefallinos and influenced by Dimitrios Galanis, Tassos forged a unique artistic voice that resonated across 20th-century Greece.

  • During the German Occupation, he joined the EAM Artists’ Union, designing resistance posters printed illegally.

  • From 1954–1967, he designed stamps for the Greek postal service, later also working for the Republic of Cyprus until his death in 1985.

  • His “Black and White” period in the 1960s and 1970s is considered his most iconic, with monumental woodcuts reflecting social struggle, symbolism, and political events.

  • His work has been widely exhibited internationally (France, Italy, U.S., Soviet Union, Japan).

The 1987 National Gallery retrospective was the first major exhibition after his death, solidifying his reputation as Greece’s foremost engraver.
