Giorgos Milios (1935–2021) was a distinguished Greek painter and printmaker known for his poetic and symbolically rich visual language. Born in Athens, he studied painting under Yannis Moralis and printmaking with Yannis Kefallinos and Kostas Grammatopoulos at the Athens School of Fine Arts, graduating with five distinctions. He continued his studies in Paris (École des Beaux-Arts) with scholarships from the Mika Skouze Foundation and the French government, also attending art sociology seminars by Jean Cassou. Milios worked as a conservator at the Byzantine Museum of Athens and the Monastery of Sinai. He taught at the NTUA School of Architecture (1970–1988), later becoming a professor at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and then professor of printmaking at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1996–2001). His first solo exhibition was in 1975 at the Centre for Visual Arts (KET), of which he was a founding member. He held numerous solo and group exhibitions in Greece and abroad. Milios’s work is characterized by abstract symbolic figures, biomorphic shapes, and surreal, emotionally charged spaces. Through experimentation with mixed media and a personal visual vocabulary, he conveyed a poetic universe filled with philosophical inquiry and artistic freedom. His work blends surrealism, expressionism, and art historical references, forming a unique and introspective style.
