Charles-Louis de Sevelinges (1767-1831) was a French writer, translator and journalist. He was a prolific translator, rendering significant German and Italian works into French.

René Puaux (1878-1936) was a French historian and journalist. During the Balkan Wars, he was war correspondent for the French newspaper “Le Temps”. He was an ardent supporter of the Greek cause. In 1919, he covered the hostilities of the Greco-Turkish War. His articles and memories of Greece appeared in several publications. He donated his collection on Greece to the Greek state.

About the book: In 1828, de Sevelinges translated from Russian the work of Baron de B***, The Last Hour of the Turks, in which he championed the Greek cause as the key to restoring Europe’s balance—directly opposing Austrian Chancellor Metternich’s stance of suppressing all revolutionary movements. Nearly a century later, in 1920, René Ruaux republished de Sevelinges’ translation, viewing Greece as a vital part of Europe deserving support in its struggle against the Turks.
