Τhe “Patriotic Foundation for the Protection of the Child” was founded in 1914 as a classic women’s philanthropic association, which gradually emerged, during the interwar period, as the main body of social policy for motherhood and childhood. The purpose of the Patriotic Association of Greek Women was, according to its founding statute, to organize women’s philanthropy in a more methodical way, adopting “the new directions of practical social policy”. During its operation, its name and institutional framework changed several times, while the boundaries between the collective and the state were fluid. Also using a network of female volunteers, this public collective tried to contribute not only to the treatment of child mortality, but mainly to the hygienic enlightenment of the popular strata and to the formation of the concept of “scientific motherhood” and “normality” regarding the development of children. body. In August 1917, a few months after the establishment of the Venizelos government in Athens and the departure of the royal family, the Patriotic Association disbanded, following the fate of other royalist associations. In its place, the “Patriotic Care Foundation” is established, with the aim of caring for soldiers and their families, helping victims of natural disasters and natural disasters, helping the needy, the sick, the disabled, unprotected mothers and children. It was preceded by the establishment of the Ministry of Care by the government of Thessaloniki. In 1921, the institution will be abolished, in order to re-establish the Patriotic Association, now surrounded by pro-royal officials, while after the Greco-Turkish War, it will return to the form of the Patriotic Foundation with a “Venizelian” administration. Throughout the 1920s, the physiognomy of the collective will be affected by national adventures and changes in the political scene. In 1929 it was renamed again to the “Patriotic Foundation for the Protection of the Child”. In 1931 the “Hellenic Pediatric Society” was also founded. The Foundation and the Society were intersecting circles, while other collectives with which the members of the foundation had points of contact were the Hellenic Red Cross and the feminist organizations of the interwar period, the National Council of Greek Women and the Association of Greek Women for Women’s Rights. Thus, despite the dominant role played by doctors in shaping the profile of the Foundation, the role of some women who participated both in its actions and in the Society was no less important. Most had studied law, medicine, pedagogy and psychology and were members of women’s organizations. Among them, Zoi Fragou, Anna Papadimitriou, Dora Papakonstantinou, Agni Drosopoulou, Myrsini Kleanthos-Papadimitriou and Bertha Leka are a frequent presence. Together with the volunteers and the first visiting sisters were a circle of dynamic women who somehow specialized in protecting childhood.
