Rare, 1979, Original Greek Peace Movement Poster, Peace Committee of Intellectuals and Artists

120.00

Rare original Greek political and cultural poster issued in Athens in 1979 for the founding gathering of the Peace Committee of Intellectuals and Artists.

The event took place on Monday, January 22, 1979, at the Chemistry Auditorium of the National Technical University of Athens and marked the establishment of an important Greek pacifist and anti-war initiative bringing together prominent figures from the worlds of literature, art, and intellectual life.

Printed in Athens in 1979, the poster is an excellent example of late-1970s Greek political graphic design, combining strong typography, minimalist visual structure, and the aesthetic language of European peace and solidarity movements during the Cold War era.

The Committee, chaired by Evangelos Giannopoulos, formed part of the wider Greek peace movement connected to anti-war activism, nuclear disarmament campaigns, and Mediterranean peace initiatives. It continued the intellectual and political tradition associated with earlier Greek peace organizations that included figures such as Grigoris Lambrakis and Yannis Ritsos.

The Committee later participated in various peace actions and cultural initiatives, including Mediterranean peace conferences and anti-nuclear campaigns, contributing significantly to public debate and civic mobilization in Greece during the late 20th century.

Today, original posters connected with Greek peace movements and intellectual activism of the 1970s are increasingly scarce and highly desirable for collectors of political ephemera and Cold War graphic design.
