Historical Context:
The Greek Senate (Γερουσία) was established by the 1844 Constitution granted by King Otto following the Revolution of September 3, 1843. Senators were appointed for life by the monarch, with powers intended to balance the elected lower house. The Senate was often criticized as a tool of royal influence and was abolished in 1864 with the arrival of King George I and a more liberal constitutional structure.
