Archbishop of Patras Ierotheos (1839-1903) was born as Petros Mitropoulos in the village of Melissopetra in the Municipality of Dimitsani in Arcadia. In 1857 he became a monk and in 1866 he enrolled in the Theological School of Athens. Alongside his studies, he served as a Deacon at the Holy Church of St. Ekaterini in Athens. After his graduation, he served as a Preacher in the Prefectures of Etoloakarnania (1870-1872), Laconia (1872-1875) and Fthiotida (1875-1876). He then joined the movement of Apostolos Makrakis. In 1879 he interrupted the memorial service of the Metropolitan of Athens Prokopios and was sentenced to exile first to the Holy Monastery of Panahrantou in Andros and then to the Holy Monastery of Logovarda in Paros. In 1884, following a request for repentance, he returned to active duty. He served as a Preacher in the Prefectures of Etoloakarnania (1884-1885) and Attica and Boeotia (1885-1892). On December 6, 1892, he was ordained Archbishop of Patras and Ilia in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens. The ordination was performed by the Metropolitan of Athens Germanos. In January 1900, the Prefecture of Ilia became a separate Diocese and since then it only bore the title of “Patras”. Suffering from apoplexy, he fell asleep in Athens on March 7, 1903. He was the great-uncle of Greek maestro Dimitris Mitropoulos.
