About the author

Georgios Filaretos (1848–1929) was a distinguished Greek jurist, politician, senator, and publisher, regarded as one of the pioneering figures of Greek democratic thought. A strong advocate of a monarchy-free democracy, he was honorably referred to by Eleftherios Venizelos as the “Father of the Greek Democracy.” In 1909, Filaretos published the historic newspaper «Ριζοσπάστης» as a weekly newspaper of democratic principles. His intellectual and political activity placed him at the heart of Greece’s reformist movements in the early 20th century.

About the book

The book offers a concise yet informative presentation of San Marino’s history, political system, institutions, and monuments, accompanied by black-and-white photographic illustrations. It stands among the earliest Greek-language publications devoted to San Marino, making it a notable item of early Greek travel literature and political thought.

Additional Notes

At the end of the book, Filaretos thanks his friend Konstantinos Rados, (1862–1931), distinguished Greek writer, naval historian, and academic, for the photographs, which were sent by French art historian Louis-Eugène-Georges Hautecœur. The book also references Napoleon’s famous remark on San Marino, praising it as a model republic.
