Iosif R. Koundouros (1885 – 1942) was a Greek lawyer and politician from Crete. In 1916 he joined the Thessaloniki movement, when Eleftherios Venizelos assigned him the organization of military justice in Thessaloniki. He was then appointed royal commissioner of the Military Court in Athens (1917-1920). In October 1920 he left the military service in order to get involved in politics and was elected deputy of Lasithi in the 3rd National Assembly (1920), 4th National Assembly (1924), 2nd Period (1928), 3rd Period (1933) and (1936). He had served in 1924 in the Government of Alexandros Papanastasiou as Minister of Legal Order and during the dictatorship of Th. Pangalos (Government of Theodoros Pangalos 1925) as Minister of Justice (from June to November 1925)[2]. He was also Minister of Agriculture (from November 7, 1925 to January 14, 1926). Then, during the Venizelos government, he assumed the position of Minister of the Navy and Aviation (from January 10 to March 5, 1933).

Koundouros was distinguished for his impetuous and persuasive rhetoric.The speech he gave in Alexandria, Egypt in 1921 for the Liberal Party of Eleftherios Venizelos is included in this booklet and is a great example for his passionate eloquence.
Roussos I. Koundouros (1923 – 1990) was a Greek doctor, resistance fighter and pioneer of free radio. His father was Iosif Koundouros, jurist and member of parliament, who had also served as a minister. He also dabbled in cinema and directed many short films and documentaries, such as “In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great”. He fought in the National Resistance (EAM and ELAS) during the German Occupation. He was a pioneer in the establishment of the EDA party and during his exile in Makronissos he was known as “the doctor of Makronissos”.
