Description
Original and rare first edition (1930) of Towards Disaster: The Greek Army in Asia Minor in 1921 by Prince Andrew of
Greece, translated from the Greek by Princess Andrew of Greece (Princess Alice of Battenberg), and published by
John Murray, London.
This important historical work presents Prince Andrew’s personal defense and perspective on the Greco-Turkish War (1919–1922), one of the defining conflicts of modern Greek history. Serving as Major General in the Greek Army during the Asia Minor Campaign, Prince Andrew provides an insider’s view of the military and political circumstances leading to the Greek defeat at the Battle of the Sakarya in 1921 — a pivotal moment in the collapse of Greece’s Asia Minor expedition.
The book holds particular significance not only for its historical content but also for its royal authorship: Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark (1882–1944) was the father of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and the seventh child of King George I and Queen Olga of Greece. His wife, Princess Alice of Battenberg, translated the work into English.

Historical Context:
The Greco-Turkish War (1919–1922) was fought between Greece and the Turkish National Movement during the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire following World War I. The conflict ended disastrously for Greece, leading to the 1923 population exchange and the exile of much of the Greek royal family — including Prince Andrew himself.
Written during his exile in France, this book serves as both a personal memoir and a defense of his controversial military role in the Asia Minor campaign.
