Penelope Delta (1874 – 1941) was a Greek author. She is widely celebrated for her contributions to the field of children’s literature. Her historical novels have been widely read and have influenced popular modern Greek perceptions of national identity and history.
About the book: The novel is one of the most important works of Greek historical literature. Set in Byzantine Macedonia around 1000 AD, the book narrates the period of conflict between Emperor Basil II (known as the Bulgar-Slayer) and Tsar Samuel of the Bulgarians. It incorporates real historical events, such as the Battle of Spercheios (997) and the Battle of Kleidion (1014), where Basil II decisively defeated the Bulgarians. Delta uses these events to create a vivid setting, highlighting the era through the eyes of its characters. Although initially aimed at a young audience, the novel has been loved by readers of all ages and is considered one of the top works of Greek literature. Delta manages to convey the historical era with vividness, making the book an important tool for understanding Byzantine history and Greek cultural heritage.
