About the Author

Ioannis Sotiriou Alexakis was a distinguished Greek military leader who reached the rank of Lieutenant General.
He fought in multiple major 20th-century conflicts and is historically remembered for:

  • Leading the 1st Independent Cretan Battalion into Thessaloniki (26/10/1912)

  • Liberation campaigns including Halkidiki, Lachana, Pilaf Tepe, and Skra

  • Service in the National Defense Movement and the Plastiras-Gonatas Revolution

  • World War II command roles and a dramatic escape from a torpedoed POW transport, surviving where others did not

Alexakis was also associated with key political and military leaders such as Eleftherios Venizelos and Nikolaos Plastiras.
