Tassos was one of Greece’s most important 20th-century engravers, known for his politically charged and socially conscious art. A student of Dimitrios Galanis and Kefallinos, Tassos became a powerful voice in visual resistance, chronicling key events in modern Greek history through printmaking. His work was exhibited globally, including in France, the U.S., Italy, the Soviet Union, and Japan.
This artwork unites revolutionary symbolism with Byzantine iconography, portraying Angela Davis with elongated, ascetic features, reminiscent of Eastern Orthodox saints. From her hands, doves take flight—a metaphor for liberation and the spreading of ideas. Tassos’ use of black and white, along with dramatic contrast, imbues the piece with a timeless, spiritual energy.
This visual tribute aligns Davis with the struggle against injustice, resonating deeply with Ritsos’ verse and the universal fight for freedom. A unique and moving collector’s item that stands at the intersection of art, politics, feminism, and resistance.
