About the book: This book is a continuation of his work “The Anadromaris (Retrospector)” of 1914 and focuses on the history, toponyms and traditions of Attica, beyond the city of Athens. Kambouroglou searches for the “underlying Hellenism” of Attica through the remaining Greek toponyms, such as Mesogeia, Gerakas (Ierax), Oropos, Dionysos, Marathon, Noinoe (Oinoe), Kalisia (Ekali), Vraona (Vravrona) and Lavrio. Furthermore, it examines the numerous monasteries and churches of the region, such as Karea, Penteli, Kaisariani, where the use of the Greek language was maintained despite the presence of Albanian-speaking populations.
Dimitrios Kambouroglou (1852 – 1942) was a Greek historian, writer, academic, lawyer, poet and member of the Academy of Athens. His historical research as a historian focused mainly on the period of Turkish rule and concerned only the Athens region, which is why he was given the nickname “Athenaeographer”.
