Description

Scarce interwar administrative publication issued by the Free Zone Committee of Thessaloniki (Επιτροπεία Ελευθέρας Ζώνης Θεσσαλονίκης), codifying the legal and regulatory framework governing one of Greece’s most significant economic institutions of the 20th century.

Published in 1927, this volume presents the official administrative codification of all legal provisions concerning the Thessaloniki Free Zone, including laws, decrees, and regulations that defined its operation, management, and supervision. As such, it constitutes a primary reference document for understanding the institutional, legal, and economic mechanisms behind the Free Zone during its formative years.

The Free Zone of Thessaloniki was conceived to restore the city’s commercial importance after the Balkan Wars and World War I, when Thessaloniki lost much of its traditional hinterland. Operating as a customs-exempt zone within the port, it facilitated international transit trade, storage, processing, and re-export of goods without customs duties, playing a strategic role in Balkan and Mediterranean commerce.

This codification reflects the mature phase of the Free Zone’s establishment, following the activation of the Committee in October 1925, and provides insight into state-led economic planning in interwar Greece.
