About the book: This is a rare original edition during the height of World War II. The booklet was part of a wartime campaign to raise awareness in the United States about the Greek people’s heroic resistance and the severe hardships they endured under Axis occupation. The publication features powerful essays and stories that capture the spirit, sacrifice, and resilience of the Greek people during one of the most tragic chapters in their modern history. It also served as a humanitarian appeal, highlighting the need for international support and aid.
The American Friends of Greece (AFG) was (and in some forms still is) an organization established with the goal of supporting Greece, particularly during times of crisis, through humanitarian aid, cultural support, and philanthropic efforts. The AFG originated around World War II and the Greek Civil War (1940s), when Greece was undergoing immense suffering due to occupation, famine, and later internal conflict. It was composed primarily of American citizens with ties to Greece, Philhellenes, diplomats, scholars, and Greek-Americans. Their primary goal was to provide relief aid, medical supplies, and reconstruction assistance.
