Special Item of the Month

On the occasion of the upcoming 100th anniversary of Mikis Theodorakis’ birth, we would like to highlight this rare, signed document containing Theodorakis’ speeches and political reflections during his exile under the Greek military junta.
In 1970, following international pressure and appeals by prominent figures in the arts—such as Arthur Miller and Dmitri Shostakovich—Theodorakis was allowed to leave Greece and relocate to Paris. Initially collaborating with the KKE Interior, he soon distanced himself, realizing that internal divisions within the Left would prevent any true liberation of the Greek people from authoritarian rule.
For Theodorakis, the path to political freedom lay through a cultural revolution—only then could a lasting political solution emerge.
Throughout his life, he remained a deeply political figure, serving his people not only through his music but also through tireless efforts to inspire unity—among Greeks and beyond. He extended his vision to the people of Palestine and Israel, always believing that harsh realities could only be overcome through love and service to humanity, expressed through the universal language of art.
